Ontario International Airport

by Napoleon on May 8th, 2012 at 12:19 am
Posted In: Services

Writing a review for an airport is not common, it seems odd but I would like to share my very good experience with Ontario International Airport.

Ontario International Airport is a medium-sized airport approximately 35 miles east of Los Angeles. It is located in the Inland Empire servicing Riverside, San Bernardino Counties and portions of north Orange County and east Los Angeles County. It is a full-service airport with service to major U.S. cities and many international destinations.

I have used the other airports in Southern California like Bob Hope Airport in Burbank and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) but I like using Ontario International. I flew to the Bay Area thru Ontario International and landed at Oakland International Airport. I arrived at Ontario 40 minutes before the flight and still made it. Parked my car across the departure terminal; the parking lot is a 5 minute walk to the terminals There was a line before the security screening area but the line moved quickly.

The airport building is very clean, organized and airy but there are not many options for dining.

I could not say the same for Oakland Airport. The car rental lot is off site and took me an hour and 30 minutes to get there using the shuttle bus. Have to wait for the 3rd shuttle bus, it is not very organized.

Except for travelling internationally where LAX is necessary, I would use Ontario International Airport anytime. I like this low-key airport, it is hassle-free. It is a great alternative to LAX.

ArcLight Cinemas

by Napoleon on May 2nd, 2012 at 12:37 am
Posted In: Fun & Entertainment

ArcLight Cinemas is a movie house with somewhat upgraded offerings compared to the usual movie house located in malls. I went to the Pasadena location located at Paseo Colorado mall.

Seating is assigned upon purchasing your ticket and you get to choose the location of your seat. You don’t have to rush to the auditorium to save your seat. In standard cinemas you have to get in early so you don’t have to seat in front. Tickets can be purchased online at no extra charge.

The seats are a little bit wider so it is more comfortable and the arm-rest is double-wide. Although the seats are wider, they don’t recline like in some standard cinemas. They claim their sound system exceeds the sound system of standard movie house but I did not notice this. Their picture and sound system are the same as the standard movie house. There’s a bar at the lobby where you can purchase alcoholic drinks and bring it inside. You can enjoy watching the movie while sipping your cocktail. Because of this, there are auditoriums where you have to be 21 to enter.

Late seating is not allowed so is use of cell phones when the screening has started. They have very limited trailers and no commercials; instead a staff gives a short review of the movie, the actors and who directed it.

While it is true that there are no commercials or trailers, wider seats and seating is assigned I have to fall in line to buy the ticket. With numerous screens they only have a few cashier stations. The price of the tickets is more expensive than standard cinemas they should add more cashiers. The one in the Hollywood at Sunset Blvd is even worst.

The extra money they charge is not worth it. Parking is not even free.

Armstrong Garden Centers

by Napoleon on April 20th, 2012 at 8:34 pm
Posted In: Home & Garden

Armstrong Garden Centers is a nursery based in Southern California. The nursery is well known for its roses and other ornamental plants, fruit trees, and outdoor furniture. Most of its stores are in Southern California and some in Northern California.

Armstrong Garden is not your typical big box nursery. Their prices are more expensive but they sell only quality plants and the service is exceptional. There’s always somebody to help and answer questions.

All the plants they sell are top quality. They guarantee that the plants they are selling will thrive, if not you can return it. They have very good selection of good healthy plants. You can tell their bedding plants are always fresh; there are no roots coming out at the bottom of containers. All plants and shrubs I have bought have thrive very well.

The choice for potted rose is quite many from hybrid teas, English rose, landscape rose , climbing rose and standards. The roses are potted so you know how the flowers look like and also have instant flowers instead of waiting a few months of flowers from bare root roses.

Pottery selections are extensive and they come in all sizes and shape. They are more expensive than big box stores but like their plants, the quality is also exceptional. The pots they have are something you will not find at big box retailers even at some smaller nurseries.

I have shopped at several of their nurseries and all of the stores are in top condition and very well maintained. I have yet to meet an employee that is not nice. All of them are nice, patient and ready to help. They have very solid customer service. Another service they offer is delivery.

Armstrong Garden is the best garden center in the Southland. best in merchandise and best in service.

Larkin’s

by Napoleon on April 10th, 2012 at 1:04 am
Posted In: Food, Dining & Cuisine

Larkin’s is a restaurant in Eagle Rock district of Los Angeles offering soul food with dishes characterized by old recipes of the South combined with contemporary flavors. Larkin’s is a “contemporary soul food joint”.

The restaurant is a converted California bungalow with the surround patio used for al fresco dining. The walls are painted with deep colors of orange, butter and brown. Artworks adorn the walls. You could tell the renovation is done by somebody who likes to watch HGTV which is part of the charm.

The tables are made of recycled doors; the chairs are mismatched and probably bought from flea markets and yard sales. Mason jars for making fruit jams are used as glasses and cheap glassware doubles as flower vase.

We went there on a Sunday night for dinner and the place is packed. We had to wait for half an hour for a table. The wait is worth it. We started with the house salad; spring mix with sliced red onions, sliced pears, walnuts (candied and it is sweet), goat cheese and drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. The dressing is so good and not overly sour which most restaurants do.

Foe the main course, I had the jambalaya in a large plate. The presentation is very appetizing; at the center is a cup of rice topped with corn bread. The corn bread is very moist but the rice can be improved. Overall the dish is very good and not overly spicy. You taste a hint of spiciness but not overpowering.

Like most soul food restaurants, besides gumbo and jambalaya Larkin’s have several fried food: fried chicken, jumbo shrimp, seared pork and catfish. Several BBQ items are also on the menu. Sandwiches prepared Southern style is also available.

Larkin’s is a great place for home-cooked soul food. The service is not very polished but it is part of the charm. The servers are not stewardess efficient but they are very friendly. Dining at Larkin’s is like dining at your friendly neighbors.

Larkin’s address is 1496 Colorado Blvd., Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, CA 90041.

King Taco

by Napoleon on March 18th, 2012 at 2:24 am
Posted In: Food, Dining & Cuisine

King Taco is a fast food restaurant offering Mexican food with soft taco as the specialty. The restaurant chain is based in Los Angeles. Other than tacos they also serve burritos, sopes, nachos and Mexican drinks such as Jamaica, horchata, and tamarindo."King Taco"

They have at least 20 restaurants mostly in Los Angeles county most of which are concentrated in areas which are predominantly Mexican American. Additionally, King Taco has expanded with locations in the Inland Empire, Ontario and Fontana. Although it is a chain restaurant, their restaurants still look “family” owned unlike other chains like McDonalds, Taco Bell etc. Their walls are decorated with paintings with Mexican theme but they look rather “cheap” but I came here for the food not the paintings and other decors hanging on the wall.

For this review I visited their Lynwood location along Long Beach Blvd. during lunch. This location is quite large at least twice as large as most fast food chains. It is clean and looked well maintained. The place is a little bit crowded but since they have several cashiers taking orders, it went very quick.

I ordered 4 soft Carne Asada tacos which came with chopped asada beef, chopped onions and cilantro. There are 2 choices of sauce: red which is hot and green which is the milder version. I asked for the green and it was hot. The red must be super hot. The tacos looked small compared to traditional Mexican tacos but all four tacos of them filled me up. The meat is very tender and juicy; onions look and tasted very fresh and so with the cilantro.

Next time I will try the other items like the sopes and maybe also try their tamarindo drink.

Overall, King Taco is very good and worth going back to. It is cheap with very good food. The food is authentic unlike large chains like Del Taco or Taco Bell.

Sicha Siam Thai Cuisine

by Napoleon on March 4th, 2012 at 11:16 pm
Posted In: Food, Dining & Cuisine

Sicha Siam Thai Cuisine in Eagle Rock district of Los Angeles is a small Thai restaurant in a strip mall. We have been going to Sicha Siam for several years now, often we order for delivery.

Sicha Siam offers a wide range of a Thai food; la carte entrees and combination plates. They offer a choice of chicken, pork, tofu and vegetables. They have selections of soup, salads, curries, and seafood and noodle dishes.

Appetizers include vegetable egg rolls, fried tofu, fried wonton, steamed dumplings, shiu mai, shrimp rolls (marinated shrimp wrapped in wonton), chicken and beef sate’ and butterfly shrimp.

Their best soups include:

1)      Tom Kha, hot and sour broth with coconut milk, mushroom, chili and hebs with a choice of vegetables, tofu and chicken

2)      Tom Yum, hot and sour broth with mushroom, chilli and herb

3)      Vegetable tofu soup, a light clear soup with tofu, bok choy, scallions, and carrots

4)       Not on their menu but have always ordered is chicken rice soup, clear light soup with chicken, bok choy, brocoli, carrots and    garnished with scallions.

For their best salad, try:

1)      Apple salad, crunchy apples (combination of red and green apples), with roasted peanut and tangy dressing

2)      Yum Nua (beef salad), grilled and thinly sliced beef, lettuce, onions chilli and spicy lime juice dressing

I have always ordered the following entrees:

1)      Prik King, choice of meat, tofu or shrimp sautéed with green beans with curry paste

2)      Garlic, with a choice of tofu, meat or shrimp sautéed with garlic, pepper, carrots and broccoli

For curry, I have tried the green curry with chicken or beef. It has green chili curry with bamboo shoots and coconut milk.

I have tried the beef sate combo. It is marinated chicken skewered and grilled. The dish comes with 5 skewered chickens, shrimp fried rice, and pickled cucumbers. The peanut sauce is very good. But like most chicken dishes, the chicken is a bit dry; the peanut sauce definitely helps. I have tried the ginger fish combination but I am not very impressed.

Their Ro-Ti desert is a Thai version of crepe with peach stuffing. The sticky rice with coconut milk custard is very good too.

Sicha Siam is recommended. The food is good but not exceptionally great. The service is very good; it is also a good thing that they deliver.

Mt. Fuji Garden Center

by Napoleon on February 26th, 2012 at 11:52 pm
Posted In: Home & Garden

Mt. Fuji Garden Center in Upland, San Bernardino County is a garden center specializing in the finest quality plant material and garden ornaments.

Mt. Fuji Garden Center is for serious gardeners. They have great selection of plants that cannot be found in big box home centers like Home Depot or Lowes. They have plants that cannot be found at these big box stores.

They have great selection for fruit trees, California native plants, bonsai, heritage vegetables (heirloom tomatoes) and other specialty plants.

The prices are a little higher than big box stores but you can get solid advice and tips from the staff. It is hard to get this service from the big box stores.

The place looks run down but serious gardeners are not for the store looks. They patronize this kind of nurseries because of the plant selections and service they offer. They carry hard to find plant species.

For my visit, I bought a peony. Other than ordering on-line or thru a catalog, where in Southern California can you buy a peony? I hope it will bloom in the Southern California weather.

If you are a serious gardener and love gardening, this place is for you.

Address: 1555 W. Foothill, Upland, CA 91786.

Their website is www.mtfujigardencenter.com.

Two months after planting, the peony I bought is in full bloom. Most peony does not bloom on the first year of planting. Mt. Fuji really sells healthy and quality plants. I will be a regular customer from now on.

Commerce Casino

by Napoleon on January 26th, 2012 at 1:02 am
Posted In: Fun & Entertainment

Commerce Casino is the largest cardroom in the world. It has over 240 tables for different kinds of table games. It is located a few miles south of downtown Los Angeles in the City of Commerce.

The casino is not the typical Las Vegas style casino where you play against the house. Players play against each other with one of the players acting as the bank. The bank goes around among the players; each player is given the chance to be the bank. This is the difference between a casino and a cardroom. The house serves as a host for these games, it provides the venue for the players. There are no slot machines.

Commerce Casino offers a wide variety of poker games including:

  • Seven-card stud
  • Texas hold ‘em
  • Omaha Hi-Lo Split
  • HORSE

Other card games include:

  • Pan 9
  • No Bust Blackjack
  • 3 Card Poker
  • Let It Ride
  • Caribbean Stud Poker
  • 21st Century Baccarat
  • EZ Baccarat
  • Pai Gow Poker
  • Super Pan Nine
  • 13 Card (Chinese poker)

The casino offers free poker lessons at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, also poker tournaments and off-track betting.

The casino is also a no-smoking venue unlike Indian casinos in the area.

It is home to several eating establishments including the following:

  • Manhattan Deli Restaurant & Bakery, located in the main lobby of the hotel
  • The Arena Sports Bar & Grill, located in the high-limit section and offers a variety of international cuisine, live entertainment, live sports and karaoke
  • The Commerce Café, located near the main poker room offers traditional American cuisine and pastries.
  • Tableside dining (which is odd, try playing with somebody eating something greasy and touching the casino chips, not very good)
  • Buffet Restaurant

Most of the restaurants have okey food, and they are very reasonable.

I noticed that most patrons in the casino are Asians. This is the place to play poker if you are a poker player. The other card games requires a $1 every hand which I think is very expensive. That’s how the casino earns its money. It is okey if you win but not if you are losing which is more often than not. One thing I notice is the dealers are not very friendly.

In addition to the cardroom, the casino complex includes the 200 room Crowne Plaza.

Address: 6131 East Telegraph Road, Commerce, CA  90040

The Gumbo Pot Opens Second LA Location

Posted by: cherlihy

(HOLLYWOOD, CA) – It doesn’t have to be Mardi Gras in Hollywood to indulge in traditional New Orleans fare. Opening on December 26 at Hollywood & Highland Center, The Gumbo Pot is a “hot” spot known for serving signature Cajun and Creole dishes including jambalaya (spicy rice with chicken and andouille sausage),seafood gumbo, red beans and rice, homemade cornbread, chicory coffee and beignets, the official doughnut of Louisiana. The Gumbo Pot has served its authentic Southern cooking in the Farmers Market since 1986 and the Hollywood & Highland Center location will be the restaurant’s second site in Los Angeles.

The Gumbo Pot

Suite 418

(323) 469-1550

Monday – Thursday 11am – 8pm

Friday & Saturday     11am – 9pm

Sunday                       11am – 7pm

http://thegumbopotla.com/

About The Gumbo Pot: The Gumbo Pot has carried on the legacy of serving authentic New Orleans food in the Farmers Market since 1986. In the beginning, it took some time to catch on with the Los Angeles food crowd because back then, with the exception of donuts and corned beef, the Farmers Market was not known for its restaurants. A series of New Orleans expatriates have added their touches to the menu over the years, with the main concession to LA, tastes having been to make dishes equally flavorful, but more healthful than in the Crescent City. The Gumbo Pot is owned and operated by Clinton Thompson who started with company in 1994 and trained in all aspects of operation before taking over in 2005. He is dedicated to keeping The Gumbo Pot the preeminent New Orleans eatery in Los Angeles.

Aria Restaurant

by Napoleon on January 19th, 2012 at 5:42 pm
Posted In: Food, Dining & Cuisine

Aria Restaurant in Buena Park is an all you can eat Korean restaurant specializing in Korean barbeque.

Address: 7814 Orangethorpe Avenue, Buena Park, CA  90621

Korean barbeque or Gogigui in Korean literally means “meat + roasting”. It refers to the Korean method of grilling meat (beef, pork, chicken and other types of meat). It is often prepared at the diner’s table in barbeque grills that is built into the center of the table.

The most common form of gogigui is bulgogi, thinly sliced beef sirloin or tenderloin. Another form is galbi which is marinated beef short ribs. Gogigui also includes many other kinds of marinated and non-marinated meat dishes.

Bulgogi is the most popular form of Korean barbeque. The meat is marinated with soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic and pepper. It is cooked by grilling or pan-cooking.

Galbi is made with short ribs, marinated in soy sauce, water, garlic, sugar and onions. It is cooked by grilling.

Korean barbeque is served with side dishes called banchan which include grren onion salad, and fresh vegetable dishes like lettuce, cucumbers and peppers.

Aria Restaurant has 2 options in their menu.

Option A includes the following:

Beef brisket

Marinated beef

Pork belly

Slices of horomonyki

Marinated chicken

Abomasum

Large cow intestines

California roll

Crunch roll

Avocado roll

Vegetable roll

Cucumber roll

Bean paste stew

Noodle in fish broth

Option B includes the following:

Beef brisket

Marinated beef

Pork belly

Slices of horomonyki

Marinated chicken

Abomasum

Large cow intestines

California roll

Crunch roll

Avocado roll

Vegetable roll

Cucumber roll

Bean paste stew

Noodle in fish broth

Prime sirloin

Rib eye

Salmon roll

Tuna roll

Toasted rice soap

There is lots of variety of side dishes but the rolls are not spectacular. The salads are fresh and it pairs well with the barbequed meat. The side dishes alone will fill you up.

Aria is good if you are familiar with Korean cuisine. The food is mostly authentic Korean. It is a step above the usual Korean food.

The staff is very friendly and polite but they speak mostly Korean and their English is not very good. They are very attentive in providing your needs. It is recommended to dine at Aria with somebody who speaks Korean.

Overall, the food and service are exceptional.

Their website is www.ariabbq.com.
