Jersey Mike’s Sub is a chain of submarine (sub) sandwich restaurant that started back in 1956 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. It started in a storefront location and was originally called Mike’s Subs. They started a few years ago new in Southern California.

A submarine sandwich, also known as a sub,  is a sandwich consists of a long roll of Italian or French bread split widthwise either into two pieces or opened in a “V” on one side, and filled with a variety of meats, cheeses, vegetables, seasonings, and sauces. The sandwich has no standardized name, and many U.S. regions have their own names for it; one study found 13 different names for the sandwich in the United States. The usage of the several terms varies regionally but not in any pattern, as they have been used variously by the people and enterprises who make and sell them.

Jersey Mike’s menu includes sub sandwiches and wraps. The wraps have the same kind of meats, cheese and vegetables as the subs. Choices of cold slices of meat include ham, chicken, cappacuolo, chicken, turkey, prosciuttini, roast beef, salami, pepperoni, and bacon. Cheeses include provolone, and swiss.

The Mike’s way of making their sandwich is made with slices of tomatoes, onions, chopped lettuce, drizzled with oil and vinegar and a dash of spices. This is made with your choice of cold cut meat and cheese.

Sub sandwiches can be ordered cold or hot. Hot sandwich is made with melted cheese, grilled onions, mushroom, bell peppers and meat.

I visited their newly opened location at Buena Park at Orangethorpe Boulevard. Their cold sandwiches are much better than Subway’s. The lettuce is fresh and crunchy and the oil and vinegar dressing went together very well. The vinegar is not very strong and blended very well with the oil and spices.

The store is relatively clean although I have observed some unsanitary practices by the crew. The sandwiches are assembled in front of you much like Subway does. Although the crew wears gloves, I have seen a crew scratching her nose and went back making the sandwich with washing her hand or changing her gloves. Behind their store is also another story. I have parked behind the strip mall several times and they seem to have a pile of used boxes every time. If they cannot maintain their trash, I wonder what else are they not maintaining.
