South Bay Fish & Grill is a seafood restaurant located in the Chula Vista Marina, San Diego.

They specialize in fish and seafood but their menu also includes some steaks, chicken and pasta dishes.

It is a casual restaurant with a huge dining area. The ambiance is created by a collection of nautical ornaments and yacht club memorabilia.

We went to South Bay for a dinner last Christmas eve. I ordered the tilapia which can be prepared grilled or sautéed. I did not specify how I want prepared but the server made the choice for me. It came with a cup of chicken soup, with two sides; I opted for the Jasmine rice and steamed asparagus. There’s a selection of sauce for the fish, it came with lemon caper sauce, again the choice was made by the server.

The fish was sautéed and it is greasy and not seasoned at all. The lemon caper sauce really helped. The asparagus is done properly, not overcooked and still firm. I didn’t like the chicken soup at all, it is greasy. The rice is not at all Jasmine rice. Jasmine rice is white and fluffy; the one served is off white and sticky.

One of the food items that are good is the bread. It is warm with crusty skin and soft center. It tasted like it just came out of the oven.

The service is okay, it is not bad but it is not excellent either. Although the restaurant is not packed, we waited at least 45 minutes for the food to be served. The server though is nice and very helpful.

This is not my first time to dine at South Bay. Previously, I had the carnitas which is very good. But this time around, I am not with the food and service.
